Bike Buddy

Don't want to cycle alone?

Riding with a friend is always more fun. Whether you want some more confidence riding or just don't know Sheffield very well, a bike buddy with local knowledge can help. Our guides can help you plan a route and then accompany you for the whole journey.

The price is £15 per hour, and we can take a group of up to 4 people.

Beginners or Returners

Our guides can meet you where you live and join you for a gentle ride around the area. We'll plan a route away from main roads with the goal of keeping you safe and helping you gain confidence. A session can last as long as you wish.

FAQ

I've not ridden a bike before. Will you teach me?

Sorry, we are not teachers. We'd recommend attending a "Learn to Ride" course to get you started.

What is the difference between these rides and tours?

These rides will have fewer stops to talk about history and the route depends on the participant. Of course, our bike buddies will answer any questions about Sheffield that you may have.

What should I bring?

The most important thing to bring is clothing that you feel comfortable cycling in that is appropriate for the weather. You may also wish to bring some money in case you wish to purchase refreshments on route. Snacks, water, sunglasses are also recommended.

Should I wear a helmet?

It isn't against the law to not wear a helmet but we strongly advise it. Great care has been taken to plan routes to avoid traffic but even professional riders occasionally fall off their bikes! Your group leader will always wear a helmet.

Will you teach me how to maintain my bike?

We are happy to teach you how to check your bike before a ride and can advise on any repairs. For major concerns we will recommend a local bike mechanic. Our bike buddies will bring tools and can assist with minor mechanical issues if they happen on route.

What about bad weather?

A bit of rain or drizzle is almost guaranteed in the UK! Please check the forecast before you set off. Should the weather get too extreme then we may need to postpone the ride.

Can you arrange a women's only ride?

Yes, but please contact us to check availability.

Do I need to bring anything when hiring a bicycle?

Yes. In order to collect the bikes from Russell's Bicycle Shed, you'll need to bring a physical payment card and photo ID.

Are you insured?

Yes, we have full public liability insurance.

Are you a first aider?

Yes, we completed the "Emergency First Aid at Work" training course and have a valid certificate.
